Meditation is a practice that takes a very disciplined approach to your thoughts, emotions, and body. It is not the same as sitting in a corner and listening to the music of your youth.
The practice has a number of benefits, from a psychological and physical perspective. A person can get better at being aware of their thoughts and feelings when they are relaxed and in a state of meditation. They can even learn to ignore their mind and body when they are in a relaxed state of mind. Because meditation is such a disciplined, time-consuming practice, it can seem like a bit of a chore (not really).
People who meditate have a more relaxed personality. They are able to relax the muscles in their face, allowing their facial features to look more natural. They are able to relax the muscles in their body, allowing their body to look more natural. They are able to relax the muscles in their hands, allowing their hands to look more natural. The more relaxed they feel, the more natural their body looks. They are also able to relax their limbs, allowing their limbs to look more natural.
The theory goes that when you’re fully relaxed, you’re able to notice things that you might not otherwise. For instance, if you’re not completely relaxed because you’re on a train, you are actually noticing the movement of the train. Or if you are fully relaxed because you’re at a party, you are actually noticing the noise of the party.
But there’s another side to this. If you think about how your body looks or how your limbs look, you may be noticing a change in how you feel, too. That’s because the more relaxed you feel, the more you are able to notice all these things that you maybe don’t normally notice.
If you’re feeling stressed, or even anxious you may be noticing a change in what you’re feeling, too. That’s because youre probably in a state of hypervigilance. The more you are able to notice your body, the more you are able to notice your surroundings. It’s called hypervigilance because you’re not looking just at your body.
Thats right, hypervigilance. I use those words because I think they are so very true. We are very, very aware of our surroundings. Thats all the more true when we are trying to meditate or when we are trying to do something else mind-blowing.
Thats because we are very aware of what our bodies are doing. There is a saying that goes, “If you are not aware of the body, you will be unaware of the mind.” So we are not only aware of our bodies. We are also aware of our surroundings. If youve got a pair of glasses on, you are probably not aware of what you are seeing. Thats not to say we are not aware of our surroundings. We are.
As we’ve discussed, mindfulness is about developing awareness of our surroundings. However, our attention is often unfocused. For example, we might be really into something, but when we look around we can’t get a clear picture of what it is. Thats because our attention is constantly on our bodies and the objects that are around us. When we pay attention, we are more conscious of the objects in our visual field. And thats in the other direction, our surroundings.
The more you pay attention to your surroundings, the easier they become to notice. But we get distracted by things that distract us in other ways. If we are not mindful of our surroundings, we are more likely to forget to notice them when we need to make a decision. For example, a person who is focused on a goal for the day is more likely to remember to take a shower and brush his teeth, but that’s not the case for someone who is distracted by a text message.
