It seems that every person out there has a different definition of what meditation is and where it should be done. As a result, some people claim that it is something that should only be done in a monastery or religious setting, while others claim that the practice of meditation is not something that should be done at all.
Well yes! At the very least you should be aware that there is some debate about what meditation means. The key to meditation is to be in the present moment. So, the best meditation practice is to be fully present with your thoughts and feelings.
The thing I struggle with a lot is that when I think about meditation, I feel like a zombie, that I am just staring out the window and doing nothing. I think that it is important to be aware of what we are doing when we meditate. For instance, when I meditate, I have to be completely aware of what I’m doing. If I am in a place that I don’t know, I have to be aware. If I am doing something that I know I shouldn’t, I have to be aware.
Another thing to pay attention to (and this is a big one) is that when we meditate, we are not practicing the same thing we are doing while we are meditating. In a sense, we are doing what we know we should be doing. If we are meditating to get a better understanding, I think it is important to be aware of that and be willing to change our behavior if the results are not what we expected.
