One of the ways that I find it easier to meditate is by focusing on specific objects in my head. For example, I can focus on my toes, the sky, the sun, or even my belly. This has been very helpful for me and helps me feel more centered and calm.

I remember having a very similar experience when I meditated at a very young age. I remember it feeling very calming and focused, but I could not focus on my toes or my belly. And I guess that, since I’m an acupuncturist, I’m not the only one who thinks this. A new study by the University of Auckland finds that meditation can actually lead to improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, and fasting blood sugar levels. The results are promising, but the study is small and, to be honest, I’d rather wait a few years before I start experimenting with meditation to see if there are any long-term health benefits.
Not to mention that the study was done on a sample of over 1,000 people, which is a little bit like saying that people with a broken arm have less blood sugar problems than those with a broken leg. The study is still a bit early on, and there are still a lot more questions than answers, but if you’ve never tried meditation, it may be time to get with it.
