I have a confession to make about Meditation. I have been meditating for over seven years now. I meditate for more than six hours a day every day of the year. I feel absolutely nothing besides my thoughts and feelings. I don’t have this feeling of emptyness; I have more of an emptiness around it. I am aware of my body, but I am not aware of my thoughts.
I have been meditating and reading for a long time and I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I am confused as to how I am supposed to go about it. I was introduced to meditation by a friend, and he suggested that I go with this book that he read to himself every morning. I took it up to read it. It wasnt that bad. I found it to be really useful for my own personal development. I found it to be incredibly inspiring and refreshing.
Meditation is not about being conscious of your thoughts. It is about opening your mind to them. You don’t need to think about your thoughts or stop and reflect upon your thoughts. You just have to open your mind and let them flow into your consciousness. The first step is to let your mind go wandering, but the next step is to stop letting your thoughts go wandering. This may sound odd, but it is the most important step.
The next step is to get rid of your mind. This is a hard one, but it is possible. If you put the word “mind” in front of any word, you will get a blank look. However, if you just replace “mind” with “thought”, then you can still speak about thoughts, but they won’t be the ones you had before.
But this is only the beginning. You will probably still have random thoughts and ideas running through your head. But as you start to see them in a more logical way, as words or ideas, then you will be able to control them.
Like we said before, the best thing is to train your mind to stop thinking. When you are bored, don’t think about anything. When you are sleepy, just think about the things you want to do. If you have to do something, let your mind wander and let it make up the details.
The idea of not thinking is a problem for some of us. When I was growing up I knew I had to get my mind off things, but it was always more difficult than I thought it would be. The thing is, it can be hard to train yourself to stop thinking. It takes practice, and you’ll get there eventually, but there is no shortcut when you are trying to change your habits and routines.
I have been in meditation for a few months now. The biggest thing I am working on now is finding my own place in the meditative world. It’s very difficult to find what you are looking for at first because you are trying to change who you are. This makes you second-guess yourself a lot. I am slowly figuring out my mind’s needs and boundaries. I do not want to change my mind. I want to change my habits.
So my advice is to start with the most obvious, first. Take a walk to the beach. Take a bath. Then maybe do some yoga. Then meditate in your room (or your own bedroom if you have one). Then start doing mindful activities in your home. Get into the habit of finding some quiet place to focus on your breath, and try to sit in that, and even just meditate in your own living room.
Not sure if you’ve noticed this, but your home is probably now at least a little quieter than it was the last time you did this. The point is that the quiet is because you’ve turned off the technology and your mind has to do all the talking.
