Meditation is one of those things that is so pervasive that it leaves very few areas untouched. It is a technique that has been used for thousands of years with varying degrees of success, and now, science has proven that it is a useful way of helping people.
Meditation can help with everything from depression to PTSD to addiction, and it’s also been shown to help with anxiety, stress, and even insomnia. As someone who uses meditation regularly to reduce stress and to help me focus longer on the task at hand, I have to say I’m quite impressed.
What I like about meditation is that it leaves very little room for error in the way you think and act. It is very easy to fall into the trap of self-imposed thought patterns that we think we are trying to change, such as becoming more positive or focusing on the task at hand. But it is much more difficult to try and change bad habits. If you have a habit of not meditating, you will struggle with this.
I am a big fan of the idea that it’s not possible to be constantly negative and you are actually creating your own positive self-talk. I am not saying that being a positive person is bad, rather I think it’s just that the habit of being negative is so ingrained that you have an easier time noticing it than you would if you didn’t have it. And if you can’t change your negative habit, you will find it difficult to change the positive one.
Meditation has a lot of benefits, but it also has its drawbacks. It takes a lot of conscious effort and attention to stay in the present moment and actually notice what your thoughts are and how you feel. You can have a very meditative state, but you will still have thoughts that are negative and stressful and the results from that will be negative. But the benefits to being meditative still outweigh the negatives.
The thing is, mindfulness is hard to do in a structured way. When you feel your thoughts and feel that you’re in the right mental state, you can often be in a very meditative state without having to pay attention to your thoughts. This is why you have so many mindfulness-based programs. I’ve written about mindfulness before, and I’m sure you’ve read many other articles.
