So I’m a little late posting this one, but it’s been sitting in my drafts for a long time. But as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.
A lot of meditation happens in forests and parks. You can find it in nature on a regular basis, as well as in the forms meditation takes in the arts and sciences. Its the quiet contemplation and visualization of a still life. As it turns out, one of the best ways to meditate in a forest is to walk in one. The forest may seem a bit quiet, but the sound of your footsteps will fill it with a peaceful, meditative silence.
I can’t say that meditation in a forest is like meditation in a church. There are a few reasons why I think that is so. First of all, most people I’ve met who have meditated in a forest have been there for a long, long time. Many of them have walked in a forest for years, and they are still there. For that matter, I have walked in a forest quite a bit myself, and I am still here.
That’s not to say that a forest is inherently “peaceful.” It’s more like a big old, empty room with a few trees in it. It could be really quiet, but the sound of your footsteps will fill it with a meditative silence. And for me, walking through a forest is like stepping into a meditation room. And a meditation room is like a real, peaceful place you can go to and get your mind off of your troubles.
