Most of us only have a tiny sliver of attention available to our mind, what we call “the present.” We’re so distracted by our phones, our computers, the TV, etc. that we miss out on these brief moments of serenity. Meditation helps us to focus on all our thoughts and emotions and, as a direct result, our life.
The power of meditation is not just to focus on a single thought or emotion, but to change your experience of the world in a way you can see. Meditation is often the result of a deep change in the way the mind functions, and it’s often the result of some type of trauma. It’s hard to understand exactly what meditation is without understanding what trauma is, however.
Trauma is the process through which someone suffers a deep change in how their brain works, leading to a loss of control over their life. This is the result of having been deprived of a significant amount of physical or mental power, and the result of having been faced with extreme negative circumstances which force a person to change. Trauma can also be caused by something as simple as a childhood accident or injury.
Like with the mental health diagnosis, trauma is something you can feel and sense. As an example, if your car has been damaged in some way, you can feel pain from the damaged part of the car. If you were recently mugged a little bit, you can feel pain from the mugger’s contact with your body. If you were recently raped, you can feel pain from the rape itself.
The fact that trauma can feel like a pain is the reason it’s so important to talk about it, so let’s discuss the connection between trauma and meditation.
Meditation is in fact a form of self-awareness. I think one of the most fascinating and important things I learned in my psychology class is that when a patient feels something, they may notice the emotion they feel and be even more aware of it. This is an example of how trauma can feel like a pain and the reason we talk about it so often.
It is interesting how much time people are spending meditating. From the number of meditations you can take, to the number of people who sit in meditation studios, meditation is everywhere. In fact, meditation is such a popular form of self-aware behavior that a study found that the majority of people surveyed are meditating. Even though you can meditate as an act of self-awareness, you can’t do it without it.
When we meditate, we are practicing self-awareness. That is, we are consciously aware that we are alive, aware of our bodies, aware of our brains, and aware of our emotions. It is not just our thoughts or feelings that meditate us. If you can think of anyone you know who has meditated you can be sure he or she is practicing self-awareness, too.
For many people, meditating is something they do because they feel they need to do it. But it is also something that comes naturally. It is not an act of consciousness that is merely conscious. It is also an act that brings awareness to our own bodies and our own minds.
It may be a little bit easier for us to meditate when we are in the present moment and not in some distant future or past. But it’s not just the present that matters. It is also the activity of the mind that brings awareness to our bodies and our minds.
