I am here to say that the best form of meditation for chronic pain is meditation stretching. It won’t change anything about your pain, but it will help you cope with it in a much healthier way.
I think it’s important to note that not all people have the same pain levels, or the same level of anxiety. If you find yourself having more pain than your doctor lets on, you might want to start with a series of brief sessions that give you a chance to practice deep breathing before moving on to more focused exercise.
Meditation stretching is meant to reduce pain in a controlled way. You can get that by breathing slowly, inhaling and expelling through your nose. You can also use the same technique to reduce the pain of arthritis. I don’t know what the benefit is, but I would suspect it may help with the anxiety.

You can learn to meditate in a few ways. You can do it in a group or alone. Or you can do it out of the blue to your own schedule. As I mentioned above, meditation can be easy. It’s basically trying to focus on your breathing, and for most, that’s all you need to do. You can try to do it alone or with a friend, but if you try this outside of your normal routine, you’ll find yourself getting distracted. And that’s okay.
For some people, meditation involves sitting cross-legged on a cushion with your eyes closed and a few breaths in, until you start to feel yourself start to calm down. I have a few friends that I’ve been teaching meditation to for a couple of years now, and they’ve all been doing it for more than a year. It might take some practice to get used to, but once you get it down, it is absolutely worth giving it a try.
