A lot of our daily habits, such as walking to get to lunch or brushing our teeth, are learned and repeated in order to maintain our physical and mental health.
In New York City, there are various meditation studios that offer a wide variety of classes, from yoga to zen. I used to be a regular at a studio in the Meatpacking District called Zazen Meditation, but then I moved to the East Village and found myself more on my own for a while. Now I’m back in the city and back on my own, but I do still go to Zazen every day.
I know it’s all very weird, but it’s also very necessary to have a place to sit, to be able to find a quiet place to meditate, and to feel calm. The reason for this is that it’s a part of what makes us human, and it’s something that doesn’t always seem to happen to everyone. Sometimes we have to just let go and stop trying to control things we have no control over.
I think part of the reason we are all so messed up with the internet addiction is because people are so used to not being able to control what they do on the internet. They know that they can control their food, and they know that they can control their phone, and they know that they can control what they watch, but they don’t know that they can control how they meditate.
So when you meditate, you are actually letting go of the control you have over your mind. You are letting go of the ability to do whatever the hell you want to do when you have a clear mind. You can be on Deathloop right now, and you are not controlling anything. You can be on a plane and you are not controlling anything. You can be in an office and you are not controlling anything. There is no control over your thoughts.
You can say that this is like a daydream of your own mind. That is exactly what meditation is. It’s a daydream of your own mind. But actually, meditation is something else – it is the intentional taking of the time out of a day to focus on an object (in meditation we are actually trying to meditate on the state of being in the present moment).
