I don’t know about you, but I like to start my day with a little meditation every now and then. I think it is because I have a few friends that I go to church with who do the same, but we also often start our day with a cup of chamomile tea or some meditation.
I usually get a couple of minutes or so in before I start my day, but sometimes I feel like its enough to keep me focused and on my path. I find that meditation helps me be a little more in touch with my inner self. I think because I always start my day with this little bit of mindfulness, it is also a way for me to practice gratitude. I am a big fan of gratitude, but I think it is a skill that is hard to put into practice.
Meditation is great for being mindful of our surroundings. We naturally tend to walk around looking at things, but what is mindfulness? Is it just being in one’s body without looking at the screen, or is it more specific to the body, like using a fork to hold a spoon or a cup to hold a glass? I find that mindfulness is easier to do if we have a routine with a place we go to every day and the things we do in that place.
In meditation, it is said that you are not looking at whatever it is you are being mindful of. Rather, you are simply observing the present. This is what mindfulness is all about. It is the ability to slow the pace of your thoughts and be present with the present moment. It is much easier to do when you are not constantly monitoring everything that happens around you.
To be more specific, mindfulness is the ability to observe your own thoughts and feelings without allowing them to control you. We have all been there, and while we may not be aware that we are, we usually are. It is when we let go of that self-centered control that we can find a different perspective on things and really find ourselves.
In this case, a quick, five minute mindfulness exercise that you can do to start your day will have you in the right frame of mind. As you inhale, try to focus on the sensation of your diaphragm expanding and contracting.
There is a lot of research that shows that even just five minutes of mindfulness can make you feel better, but it’s particularly important if you find yourself getting upset or stressed out. When you start to feel better, it becomes easier to focus on what you need to get done, rather than what you want to get out of your day.
I don’t know about you, but I find myself getting agitated in some of the morning meetings I have. The way our bodies are designed, we’re always up and running at the crack of dawn, so it’s no surprise that the best way to kickstart the day is to think about what’s on your schedule. I know a lot of people don’t like the idea of starting their day with meditation, but I really do like it.
I can attest to the fact that there are a lot of people, especially those who are the most creative, who find it difficult to meditate in the morning. I think it has to do with the fact that when we’re young we don’t have the luxury of time and a lot of our “time-consciousness” is tied to the hours of late night TV we watch.
Mindfulness meditation is a technique which trains your mind to not think about the immediate present moment, but instead to focus on something that is more timeless and eternal. I’m not talking about just sitting down and thinking about what you are eating right now it is just focusing on a thought or an image or a sound for a period of time. This is a way to start your day off with more peace, and I think that it can only be done in the morning.
