Some people are doing silent meditation while reading a book or having a conversation. I guess it depends on how you feel.
Silence is one of the most effective ways of clearing the mind and relaxing (or not, as the case may be). It also happens to be one of the most effective ways of cultivating a more meditative state. Even people who have never meditated before are finding themselves getting in a lot of the benefits of meditation, such as reduced stress, feelings of peace, and improved mood.
