In this case, total self-awareness would mean understanding that you have to make choices.
The other way is through the practice of meditation. The Buddhist monks are known for their ability to sit for hours, in a state of total silence, with no distractions, and to become very quiet. By doing this, they achieve a state of total self awareness. They are able to understand that they are not the center of the universe. The center of the universe is God or a higher power. Therefore, they know that they are not the center of the universe. They are not controlling anything.
